The workshop will be structured to include facilitated discussion interspersed with reflection and music. Viktor Frankl and the Challenge
to Change Ourselves

Workshop led by Richard Keelan. As an inmate at Auschwitz during the Holocaust, Viktor Frankl was subjected to horrors most of us can’t even imagine. Yet as he reflected on that experience, Frankl found hope and valuable insight into the human condition writing, “When we are no longer able to change a situation… we are challenged to change ourselves.” This programme will reflect on Frankl’s philosophy and equip us to challenge ourselves to change ourselves in doing the work we are called to do.

Lamentations for Spiritual Resilience

Led by Eleanor Chiari. Lamentations are a form of prayer. They are expressions of grief, ways of working through difficult feelings and in particular rage that things are not otherwise. They can awaken inner strength and open the heart up for cathartic transformation because by giving a sound, a public expression to grief, they allow for it to be held by a wider community. Unlike grief, which is personal and stays deep in the heart and in the private body, lamentation is shared. And though it cannot fix the world, it allows for the kind of connection that builds courage.

This contemplative workshop will focus on practices of lamentation as tools for spiritual resilience. After a brief introduction, participants will be invited to join in a ritual of lamentation to give expression to both private and public grief over the state of the world. This practical example will hopefully allow us to explore the ways lamentation can offer a much needed release to help move us from a place of overwhelm and despair, to one of active hope.

Circle Dancing: Connecting with nature and our spiritual values

Workshop led by Michael Allured. Circle dance, an ancient tradition in many cultures, is the oldest known dance formation. It’s an important tradition for marking special occasions and strengthening community. We’ve been circle dancing at Golders Green Unitarians since the 1980s as we mark the passing of the year. Circle dance is choreographed to different styles, can be fast or more meditative and mixes traditional folk dances with contemporary sources. We’ll have a chance to learn 8 to 10 dances around a centrepiece created for the occasion.
